Malta is Perfect for Families If You Stay in the Right Area.
Malta looks tiny on the map, but where you stay changes everything for a family trip. Stay in the wrong area and you will be stuck with noisy nightlife, rocky beaches with no entry for kids, and steep hills with a stroller.
Stay in the right area and you get calm, shallow water, sandy beaches, big family pools, and everything walkable.
After visiting Malta with family and checking dozens of hotels, this is the honest breakdown of where to stay in Malta for families, by area, not just by hotel.

- Best Overall for First Time Families: Mellieha & Mellieha Bay – Best sandy beach, calm water, big resorts.
- Best for Families Who Want Restaurants & Easy Bus: Sliema & St. Julian’s Bay – Flat, promenade, ferries to Valletta.
- Best Budget Self-Catering: Bugibba & Qawra – Apartments, cheap eats, aquarium.
- Best Quiet & Authentic Escape: Gozo Island – Farmhouses, slow pace, best for 4+ nights.
- Avoid for Young Kids: Paceville (party area) and Central Valletta (beautiful but hilly and no beach).
Most beaches in Malta are NOT for small kids. I learned this the hard way. When I searched, best beaches in Malta for families, most sites said amazing family beaches. I went. Most were rocks. Deep water right at the edge. 200 stairs down with no toilet, no shade.
If your kid wants to build a sandcastle, Malta only has 2 real sandy, shallow beaches where you don’t have to worry every second.
1. Mellieha Bay – Best for Beach Families with Young Kids
This is our #1 pick for families with kids under 10. Mellieha Bay is home to Malta’s longest sandy beach – Ghadhfa Bay. The water is incredibly shallow for 50-80 meters.
Your toddler can splash safely while you actually sit down. The sand is golden and soft, not rocky like 80% of Malta.
The area is quiet, green, and built for resorts. You are away from traffic and nightlife. Who is it perfect for? Families who want BEACH as the main activity. Parents with babies, toddlers, and kids who need kids clubs.
Downside: It is 35-45 minutes by bus from Valletta. You will need a bus or rental car for day trips.
Best Places to stay in Mellieha Malta for Families:
- Luxury Resort: Mellieha Bay Hotel – Right on the beach, huge outdoor pools, indoor pool for cooler months, kids club. You can walk from room to beach in 1 minute.
- Family Apartments: Solana Hotel & Spa – More space, kitchenette, great for longer stays. Rooftop pool with bay views.
- Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands – offers modern rooms and studios with free Wi-Fi access, a 10-minute walk from the beach on Mellieha Bay. The rooftop terrace with pool is a real highlight
- Spacious Accommodations: Seascape 24 in Mellieħa offers a spacious apartment with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The living room includes a sofa bed and a dining area.
Family Tip: Book a sea-view room on a high floor. The sunset over Mellieha Bay is worth it and kids fall asleep early – you can enjoy the balcony.
2. Sliema & St. Julian’s Bay – Best for Families Who Don’t Want to Rent a Car
If you don’t want to drive, stay here. This is the most practical base for families. Sliema has a flat, wide 3km seafront promenade perfect for strollers and scooters.
There are no sandy beaches here – it’s a rocky lido with ladders and pools carved into the rock, but kids love jumping in. For sand, you take a 15-minute ferry to Valletta or a bus to Mellieha.
Why families love this locations: You have 100+ restaurants, pharmacies, supermarkets, playgrounds, and the best bus connections on the island. You can take the ferry to Valletta (kids love the boat) in 10 minutes without parking stress.
Perfect for Families with older kids (6-16), first-time visitors, families who want convenience over sand.
Stay in Sliema or the BAY side of St. Julian’s. Avoid staying inside Paceville – that’s the party street with clubs. Hotels will still say St. Julian’s but check on Google Maps if it’s near Paceville. If you see 10 bars in 50 meters, don’t book it for family.

- Deluxe Apartment: Best View Fortina Luxury Suites offers a convenient location with stunning sea views. Tigné Point Beach is a five-minute walk away,
Family Tip: Take the Sliema-Valletta ferry at 9:30am. No traffic, 20 minutes, and you see Valletta’s bastions from the sea.
3. Bugibba, Qawra & St. Paul’s Bay – Best for Budget & Long Stays
This area in the north gets a bad reputation from party travelers, but for families on a budget who need an apartment with a kitchen and washing machine, it’s actually very smart.
You get the Malta National Aquarium, a long flat promenade, sandy man-made beach at Qawra, and tons of cheap family restaurants and ice cream shops. Most accommodation here is self-catering apartments with 2 bedrooms – which costs half of a hotel in Sliema.
Who is it perfect for? Large families, grandparents traveling together, stays of 7+ days, families who self-cater.
Downside: It is less pretty than Sliema or Mellieha. More concrete, more touristy.
Where to stay Bugibba, Qawra & St. Paul’s Bay

4. Gozo Island – Best for a Quiet Second Part of Your Trip
Gozo is a 25-minute ferry from Malta. It feels like Malta 30 years ago. If your Malta trip is 7-10 days, do 3-4 days in Malta and 3-4 days in Gozo.
Why families love Gozo? Farmhouses with private pools cost less than a hotel room in Malta. You get a private pool, BBQ, 3 bedrooms, and total quiet. No traffic. Kids can run around. Beaches like Ramla Bay have red sand and are never crowded.
Families with 2+ kids who need space, families who have been to Malta before, families who want to truly relax.
Where to stay in Gozo Malta for Families:
- Farmhouse Experience: Gozo Farmhouse Rental – Look for a farmhouse in Xaghra or Marsalforn with a private pool. Book early for July/August.
- Hotel: Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz – Luxury resort with huge family pool, kids club, and it’s right next to Dwejra Bay.
- Excellent location: Grand Hotel Gozo Just 1312 feet from Mgarr Harbor, this hotel offers rooftop dining in summer and a pool with uninterrupted views of the island of Malta.
Family Tip: Rent a car in Gozo. Buses exist but are slow and a car gives you freedom to find secret beaches.
5. Valletta & Three Cities – Should You Stay There With Kids?
Valletta is stunning – a UNESCO city, amazing history. But I don’t recommend staying INSIDE Valletta with young kids for more than 1 night.
Reasons: It’s all hills and stairs, no beach or pool, and hotels are small boutique hotels with no space for kids to run. You will carry the stroller a lot.
Better plan: Stay in Sliema and ferry in for the day. Or stay 1 night in Valletta for the experience, then move to Mellieha for beach. If you must stay in Valletta.
Best Family Option: The Phoenicia Malta – Just outside the city walls, flat access, big pool and gardens – rare in Valletta.
Where to Stay in Malta for Families by Child’s Age – My Cheat Sheet
With a Baby (0-2): Mellieha Bay. Flat beach, resorts with kitchenettes, quiet nights.
With a Toddler (2-5): Mellieha Bay or Dolmen Resort in Qawra for splash pools and shallow water.
With Kids (6-12): Sliema. Pools, aquarium nearby, boat trips, independence to walk for ice cream.
With Teenagers (13-17): Sliema / St. Julian’s Bay. They can go to the shops, have WiFi, and you are close to activities like kayaking and Comino boat trips.
Family Practical Tips for Malta (That No One Tells You)
- Beaches are mostly rocky. If you see a photo of a sandy beach, it’s likely Mellieha, Golden Bay, or Ramla Bay in Gozo. 70% of Malta is rock platforms. If sand is important, filter your hotel search by Mellieha.
- June and September are better than August. August is 35C, packed, and expensive. Early June or September has 28C, warm sea, half the crowds, and 30% cheaper hotels.
- You need water shoes. Even on sandy beaches, there are rocks getting in. Buy cheap water shoes in Sliema for €10.
- Book a hotel with indoor pool if traveling October-April. Sea is cold, outdoor pools are cold. Indoor pool saves the trip.
- Don’t rent a car if staying in Sliema. Parking is a nightmare. Rent only for 1-2 day trips to Mellieha / Golden Bay.
