1. Banff Town – Best for First-Time Families
Banff Town is the main town inside Banff National Park. It is where most families stay for the first time. Everything is on one main street called Banff Avenue.
You have over 50 restaurants, shops, a grocery store, playgrounds and the Bow River trail all within walking distance. It is also the hub for tours and for the Parks Canada shuttle that takes you to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, so you don’t have to worry about parking at the lakes at 4am in summer.
It is best for families because it is walkable. You can park your car and walk for dinner, ice cream and evening walks without driving again.
Most hotels here have indoor pools and hot tubs which kids need after a day of hiking. It is also the best area if you don’t want to drive at night. The downside is that parking is usually $25 to $45 extra per night if the hotel does not include it, and most rooms do not have a full kitchen.

This is best if you want a pool with a mountain view. They have a rooftop outdoor hot pool and a big indoor pool. Family suites come with two queen beds and a small kitchenette. Free underground parking is included which saves you $35 per night. It is a 3 minute walk to Banff Avenue.
💥 Banff Caribou Lodge & Spa 3-star hotel
This is best for families with young kids and toddlers. The indoor pool is huge and feels like a small waterpark, plus there are two hot tubs. They have a kids play room and free bike rentals with trailers for kids. Family rooms have two queen beds and a balcony. Free parking is included.
💥 Banff Ptarmigan Inn 3-star hotel
This is best for location on a budget. It is right on Banff Avenue so you step out and you are at restaurants and shops. Rooms have two queen beds and some have a small kitchenette. It has an indoor pool and hot tub and many rates include parking.
2. Canmore – Best for Space, Kitchen and Lower Price
Canmore is just outside Banff National Park, about 15 to 20 minutes drive from Banff Town. It is a real mountain town where locals live. It has big grocery stores like Save-On-Foods, cheaper restaurants, and modern condo hotels instead of small hotel rooms.
It is best for families because you get so much more space for the same money. In Banff Town, for a family of four you get one small room with two beds. But in Canmore, for the same price you get a one or two bedroom condo with a full kitchen, living room, washer and dryer, and a private balcony.
This saves you $80 to $100 per day because you can cook breakfast and simple dinners. All condos have free underground parking and indoor pools. The only downside is you must have a rental car and you will drive 20 minutes to get to Banff Town.
Best Places to Stay in Canmore for Families

This is the best overall for families. It offers one and two bedroom condos that sleep four to six people. Each condo has a full kitchen, fireplace and washer and dryer. The resort has an indoor pool with a waterslide, hot tub and games room. Free underground parking is included.

This is best for bigger families of five or six. The two bedroom suites have a full kitchen and balcony. There is an indoor saltwater pool and an outdoor playground that kids love. It is very quiet and only three minutes drive to shops and restaurants.

This is best if you want a modern condo on the main street. It has studios to three bedroom condos, all with full kitchen and mountain view balcony. It has a rooftop hot tub, indoor pool and you can walk to the bakery and grocery store. Free parking is included.
3. Lake Louise – Best for the Bucket List View
Lake Louise is not a town. It is just the famous turquoise lake, the Fairmont hotel, and two other hotels plus a small shopping mall.
It is 45 minutes from Banff Town and 10 minutes from Moraine Lake. It is the most beautiful place in the Canadian Rockies, but also the most isolated and expensive.
It is best for families for the wow factor. You wake up and walk one minute to canoe on a turquoise glacier lake. Kids will remember it forever.
If you stay here, you can see Lake Louise at 7am with no crowds. But it is not practical for your whole week because there are no supermarkets and only two restaurants, and parking is $30 to $40 extra per day. Most smart families stay here for just one or two nights.

💥Paradise Lodge & Bungalows
This is best for families who want a private cabin. You get a private log cabin with full kitchen, living room and balcony that sleeps four to six. Some cabins have a BBQ area. It has an outdoor hot tub and is two minutes drive to Lake Louise. The full kitchen saves you money because restaurants in this area are very limited.
